The Smart Cochet–Bonnet Aesthesiometer is engineered for rapid and reliable assessment of corneal sensitivity. The device operates on the principle of axial pressure transmission through a nylon monofilament of fixed diameter and adjustable length, calibrated to deliver a predictable bending force.

The monofilament length, controlled precisely by the operator’s forefinger, can be varied from 60 mm to 5 mm. As the filament length decreases, the force exerted on the corneal surface increases proportionally—from 11 mm/gm at maximum length to 200 mm/gm at minimum length. This allows for graded, reproducible sensitivity measurements across a wide dynamic range.

A clearly visible graduated scale on the instrument body displays the current filament length, enabling accurate readings during examination.

For protection and durability, the monofilament tip fully retracts into the instrument housing when not in use, safeguarding it from accidental bending or damage.
